Sleeping in the wild is not allowed in Iceland. The campsites are numerous, clean and usually, especially the campsites along the routes described in this guide, beautifully situated.
They also usually have great infrastructure. - Warm bathrooms, heated rooms where you can prepare and eat a meal as well as information points and maps of the area encourage you to stop for the night.
You will be able to drive most of the routes with a regular 4x4 car. Only a few of the routes described here are intended for large and modified off-road vehicles.
